Genius Hour Update

This week was spent researching local organizations in my community who help those in need by either providing shelter, food, or support resources. Through my research, I have found multiple organizations I could possibly donate to that would benefit from more help. I also reached out to an organization about possible volunteer opportunities and will hopefully have an update on that soon!

Reading about what these organizations do for the community has motivated me even more to devote my time to giving back. These organizations can only function if they have the funds, thus they rely a lot on donations from the community. I hope that I am able to raise some money that can go towards providing necessities like shelter and food. In my opinion, it should ultimately be a human right, but unfortunately not everyone sees it that way. Volunteering my time and giving what I can is small step in the right direction.

After a lot of back and forth and bouncing off ideas to friends and family, I decided that my first round of products that I will be selling in order to fundraise, are reusable face masks! In addition to selling the masks to fundraise, I can also make masks to donate to whoever needs them (mask prices can be quite high). Since I will be sewing these myself, I have been looking at some video tutorials, different mask patterns I could use, different techniques, etc. Between this week and next, I will be putting my sewing skills to the test and making some practice masks to ensure I will be able to create a good quality product to sell.

A big questions I have for this idea is,will people be interested in purchasing face masks if the proceeds go towards a good cause? My hope is that the answer to this question is yes, but we shall see. I might possibly do a poll on my social media accounts to see how many people might be interested to get an idea of how much product I’ll be needing to make or if I will need to come up with a different idea.

I am excited to see how the next few weeks will go, and especially excited to sew again as it has been quite some time!
